The wife asked the son if we could read his writing sample for his PhD application last week, and he sent it to us. The title is: "Waking Up Sick: How Biology, Affect, and Addiction Can Inform Ethics." It's pretty good, if I do say so myself.
It is 24 pages long, with the last 2 1/2 pages being the bibliography. It's laid out clear and concise, and he does a good job of explaining/defining terms and ideas. I was pretty impressed. Hopefully the people deciding on whether he should get into their doctorate program will be as well. I believe he hopes to do his thesis on something like this paper.
I won't give away anymore, but hopefully someday it will be available for everyone to read.
