Thinking of feasting

I've been trying to think of ideas to get the people of our church together not only for fellowship, but to have some kind of point to it also. Something I'm considering this year is celebrating the Great Feasts of the Church. I admit that I don't know a lot about this, but apparently there are twelve great feasts of the Orthodox Church. My thinking is... we can celebrate these in different ways throughout the year. I mean, we already celebrate Easter with a breakfast; we can celebrate Epiphany with communion during our worship gathering; but I was hoping some of the other ones we could maybe have a meal on Sunday night or something. We could try to connect the food with whatever that particular feast is about. And it would be cool if we could get people to maybe make a presentation about the holiday as well.

I dunno. I'm not feeling very adventurous at the moment. In fact, the more I think about trying to make plans for the coming year the more depressed I get. I've about run dry. So what's new.

Speaking of feasting, I just got back from Takaoka... yum. I annihilated everything they put in front of me.

What I want to know is... chopsticks or fork?

I think that sounds like a interesting idea. I think it would not only be a chance to get the people of the church together, but a learning experience too. I don't know much of anything about the feasts and I would guess that a lot of other people don't know much either.

As you know 1 Chronicles 15 & 16 are often cited as the foundation of what we know as worship in community. Note that 16:3 describes David passing out food for a feast as part of it. The Message uses the term BBQ in fact. Too bad he couldn't have eaten pork! But I think a worship service with a rib feast sounds great.

Always chopsticks. I've gotten so fast with them that the chef has trouble keeping up with me. Haven't found a way to eat the soup with them yet, though.

Some time I should grab Lisa and Jeremy, meet you two out there and we'd run the table. As far as I know, their stuff isn't smothered in love, but it's pretty good.

I think it sounds like a great idea. If we can somehow incorporate learning and sharing with the usual eating, it probably much more resembles true fellowship. And...chopsticks would probably expand everyone's cultural awareness! :)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. And... maybe we could even throw in Festivus just for good measure (from Seinfeld).

MR,
My chopstick skills might not match yours (yet), but we're always up for a visit to Takaoka. Just let us know!

You're on.

I'll be practicing catching flies with chopsticks until then. (read: Karate Kid)
