I could use some advice here. I think I may finally take the plunge into this century and move away from getting my music on 8-track tape. Well, okay... cassette. Well... yeah, I have some cd's. Like an idiot I gave away all my albums.Anyway... so... what's the best thing for music and podcasts and such - keeping in mind I don't have much throw-around cash? Are ipods the best? What about Zune - they look pretty cool to me? Or is there something else that's just as good or better? And... what size do I need - will 4 gig do me fine, or 8, or do I need 80? I would like to download some sermons and conference material, plus music (if you can even do that - I don't know anything).
Both my kids have ipods, but they're also both mac users. I'm not tied to any brand, but I don't want to spend a little bit of money only to have to re-spend more later. And... I just thought of this... I am also do for a new cell phone. Is there a phone that would make just as good of an mp3 player (other than the iphone - I would feel like I was trying to be too hip; plus the $ thing)?
Yeah, well, I know my comment box is going to fill up fast (ha ha)... but I really would appreciate any input or info anyone might have to offer.

I think if I were getting a new cell phone, I would go for one with the best camera and plenty of memory to record videos...I've used that feature a lot more than I thought I would.
My phone also does music, but I don't want to take the whole phone out when I listen to music the most, when I'm running. So I bought the smallest mp3 player I could find at the time, a 1gb Sandisk that's about 2 inches long with a little screen on it. Although I can put anything I want on there, if it finds a sound file, it will offer to play it.
I dumped a bunch of music on it, even stuff I knew I would never listen to and still I have a ton of space left.
But that's all I really wanted was pictures/videos and a very portable mp3 player. You may have other applications.
I have a 20GB 2nd gen iPod "classic". That holds between 10,000 and 20,000 songs (it doesn't play video). You don't need anything like 80GB unless you seriously think you're going to watch video on it. I bought my wife an 4GB iPod nano with video for Valentine's (it was something like $189 at Wally World) and she's used it to watch video and play music both and still hasn't filled it up yet. I mean, the biggest thing about lots of storage space would be if that was going to be the primary place you would keep music and videos. But if you are willing to put things on and take them off as the mood strikes, 4GB is probably PLENTY, perhaps even too big.
Zune has good prices and a bad rep (because it's Microsoft). It'd probably work just fine. As would most of the others. And MR's point is good, too - you can get some MP3 players that just work off a USB "thumb" drive, and then you get to use it as a thumb drive, too, which could be handy.
Don't forget - iPhones are supposed to be coming down in price since the 2nd generation will be coming out soon. So maybe that is still an option.
I use my phone for MP3's. There are a couple of problems, and this is why I think I would suggest an Ipod though since I don't have one, I'm not sure.
1. syncing music to the phone is a pain. With an ipod, itunes would sync it simple and easy.
2. I've had a little trouble playing certain mp3's because of DRM issues (I think). But if you use Itunes, it knows you have rights to play the song or even the podcast.
The problem with an Ipod for me is that I wouldn't carry two devices. So maybe the phone is the right choice for me, but there are some serious irritations.

I used to own an iPod until someone saw it in our car and broke a window to get it. After that I figured I'd avoid the hassle and settle for the least expensive model of mp3 player on the rack. One year later, that is the option I suggest to anyone who asks. There are so many manufacturers who make devices that do exactly what the iPod does, for less than half of what Apple charges. A trip to Costco or WalMart will verify this pretty quickly, and Sansa (our current favorite) is just one such.
