I gave myself a haircut for the first time yesterday. I bought a Wahl clipper set from Meijer's and figured if I'm going to go with short, short hair I'm going to need to cut it more so I might as well get my own clippers and save some money. Plus I figured, how hard could it be?
Well, I finally did it, and it was plenty hard. Most of it wasn't too bad to do, but the back and around the ears seem almost impossible. I tried trimming the back but kept gouging it, so I finally decided to wait until Jane got home to have her even it out. It's amazing how uncoordinated one can be while looking in a mirror backwards.
I started out using a #4 like they did at the hair cutting place. It seemed to be a little shorter than I remembered. Then I ended up using a 3 and a 2 trying to taper and get around my ears and stuff. I suppose it's okay, but it took way longer to do than I thought it would.
I may need to go back to Great Clips every couple times just to have it done right. Or if I could just talk Jane into doing it....

It gets better with practice. Hang in there. After a few times you'll get the hang of the "backwards in the mirror" thing. I actually use a handheld mirror in one hand and the clippers in the other and stand in front of the bathroom mirror. Then I can see the back of my head while staring into the bathroom mirror. It is harder to explain than it is to do. :)
