Jane's colonoscopy

Well, it's that time again. I know you've been on pins and needles waiting for me to regale you with yet another colonoscopy column. Actually... sorry about that, but this is the best place for us to keep track of such things.

Anyway, yes, Jane had her regularly scheduled 3-year exam. Fortunately, there was literally nothing there again (save one polyp, which will be biopsied but the doc didn't think it looked like anything).

The procedure for this one was a little different than previous years - what with "the covid" and all. We arrived on time at 8:45 am, checked in, and went downstairs to the new area where they do this. It is much larger, but almost all the waiting room chairs were roped off and you couldn't sit in them. Jane was called back for prep at 9 am. They didn't call me back until 9:40. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. The doctor finally shows up at 11 am. Jane asked if things were backed up and he was like, "Oh, I didn't realize this was scheduled for 10:15. I've just been sitting back there." Nice.

Well, they carted her off at 11:10 am and told me I was to wait in my car until the doctor called in 30-45 minutes. Then it would probably be another 30-45 minutes in recovery, and I could pick her up at the curb outside the heart pavilion. I figured I had time to go home and get some lunch, and the doctor called at 11:45. He said everything went fine. There was one polyp but it didn't look to be anything. So I dinked around and headed back to the hospital and a nurse calls at 12:05. She said Jane was up and eating a cracker and drinking a soda and I can pull up along the curb to get her. I was still en route but made it there in plenty of time for them to wheel her out at 12:20.

There were two interesting occurrences:
  1. When we were waiting and waiting and waiting... Jane had pushed the 'call' button for a nurse. Finally a guy in scrubs comes in and she asked him if he would adjust the bed. He does, then he starts saying what he's going to do during surgery. Doh! We didn't realize it was the doctor! Haha. Jane told the nurses later on what happened and they all thought it was funny.
  2. The other thing... Jane said she woke up about halfway through the procedure. Looking back, this has happened several times but they usually put her back to sleep. This time they didn't. She said she watched the monitor and listened to them talking for quite a bit but fortunately didn't feel anything.
So, m'Lady appears to be good for another 3 years. I suppose it should be noted that she did get a little sick during the prep this time. Normally it's not a problem, but she was up and down all afternoon, evening and night. They thought she was a bit dehydrated when we got to the hospital. All should be well now though.
