What is the best way to get over a bad run? Well, purchasing a new pair of running shoes, of course!
I don't know that this would be possible after every bad run, but it helped take my mind off the one yesterday.
I was planning to run 5 1/2 miles and walk another mile. I got to mile 4 and could go no further. Unfortunately, I still had another 2-mile walk to get back home. I think the combination of the heat and humidity, plus the fact all I'd had to eat before 11 am was a hard-boiled egg and a kiwi, I just got too worn down.
I'd been meaning to get some new shoes anyway before I run the Triple Crown at the end of September. I have been weighing whether to stick with Brooks Ghosts or try something new. I had 3 pairs of the Ghost 11, and now they are on the 13. I could have gotten the 12 at a discount online, but reviews I'd read had me questioning buying them before trying them. So, I went to Fleet Feet and tried some on.
I decided to just go with the Ghost 13. It was close enough in feel to the 11, and I was still pretty tuckered out from the run. I wasn't in the mood to mess around. I will likely order something else online in the next month or two as well.
So far I've only worn them around the house. They feel okay, but they do seem a little tighter fit like I'd read in reviews. I also wish they had a little more arch support. I may need to get some inserts. At any rate, I look forward to running in a new pair of shoes. They always feel so much bouncier.
I will maybe run in them 6 or 8 times before the Triple Crown (10k, Half, 4 mile). I don't want to break them in too much.
As for why buying new shoes is a good idea after a bad run... Well, I think it's helpful to keep things in perspective after bad runs. It's tempting to think you'll never have a good run again, that you may as well give up, and all sorts of other negative thoughts. The truth is, bad runs happen from time to time. But they are 'bad' because we also have 'good' ones. We need to push on and not allow one bad run to derail us. I suppose there's a life lesson there too. :)
