8 miles and a sore massage

RUNNING

I ran 8 miles yesterday. I believe it's the farthest I've run this year. Unfortunately it was on a treadmill.

It was raining and storming off and on all day. I've run in the rain plenty, and sometimes it even feels good. There's been so much uncertainty with my running anymore though that I finally decided I just wasn't in the mood to run in a downpour. So I headed back to my place of employ and got on a treadmill.

I was planning to do my "long run" this week of 7 miles, but once I got into it I felt so good that I just kept going! I've been trying to practice what I'm learning in the ChiRunning book, and it really seems to work. I didn't set any speed records, but I went faster than I anticipated. I focused the entire time on keeping my spine straight, pelvic bowl "full", proper body rotation and such... and there were a few times I found myself breathing through my nose without realizing it! It's kind of amazing considering the trouble I had breathing just a few weeks ago.

MASSAGE

I finally broke down and made an appointment for a leg massage this week too. I thought it would be good to have it on a Friday afternoon after I did my long run. I went through Massage Works because they showed up in a google search for sports massages, and I knew where it was. They have an introductory 30-minute massage for $35. It was... okay.

My massage therapist was Ashley. Like I said, she did okay. She didn't talk much, and she spent the entire 30 minutes just on the back of my calves - which is what I asked for. Unfortunately they were so sore when she was done that I had a hard time walking to my car afterward. They're still sore the next day! I don't know if it had anything to do with her, the massage, or if they would have felt even worse after running the 8 miles had I not had a massage. I just didn't expect this, especially when I felt so good before the massage.

Anyway, I was happy about the run, but not so pleased with how my body reacted to the leg massage. Oh well. Such is life.

ADDED LATER: I feel like I should add, after getting the massage, my legs felt fantastic!!! Very worthwhile, and I hope to schedule them regularly - or at least when they start to get sore.
