Running bear

I think it was the 2nd grade when our teacher gave us all "Indian" names (which is what everyone said back then). I suppose we'd been learning something about Native Americans, and I'm guessing she just made these names up. I don't recall anyone else's, but for some odd reason mine has stuck with me to this day.

Daniel Running Bear. I've always assumed Miss Davis donned me such because I was a good runner (and not because I was a fraidy cat who always ran from danger or difficult circumstances). Regardless, isn't it interesting that track sort of became my thing in school, and even today at 60 years of age I still identify as a runner (it's what I do).

I've been thinking about that since getting interested in Native American culture again. It kind of makes you wonder... is running such a big part of my life still today because of some random exercise a teacher did in 2nd grade... or was it prophetic?
