Who gets us?

I was standing at the desk doing my normal stuff. It's 6:45am and I've already had some tea, coffee, read a chapter from a book, had a number of conversations, as well as all the usual cleaning, laundry, and whatnot at work. A friend/member who comes in regularly walks up with his phone pointed at me and says he's going to interview me. So, I play along.

First he asks my thoughts on the TV show 'The Chosen.' I tell him I've heard of it, but have never seen it and don't know anything about it. So he asks what I think about the national ad campaign "He Gets Us." Again I tell him I've heard about it, but am not overly familiar. He proceeds to give me his take on both and it's clear he has a bias towards the TV show but against "He Gets Us." There's too much condoning of sin and not enough calling people to change, in his opinion.

At this point I turn and, still sitting there is Shane Claiborne's book 'Rethinking Life: Embracing the Sacredness of Every Person' that I had just read from. A subtle smile begins to emerge behind the squint of my eyes...

In chapter 2 Shane talks about the fact every person bears the image of God. Yet most of the time we look 'at' people and simply see black or white, rich or poor, gay or straight, young or old, pretty or ugly. But we can develop new eyes - that will allow us to look into people - and see the very image of God in everyone we encounter.

I said this is how I view the "He Gets Us" thing - they're saying God sees what's inside us, because he knows us; and Jesus has been tempted in every way just like us, and still loves us.

I don't really know if that's what the ad campaign people are trying to convey or not, but it's what I was trying to get across (and I think what Shane is trying to say in his book).

Anyway, funny enough, at that point the gentleman says he needs to go. He's leading a Bible Study this morning and they're to discuss this TV show and ad campaign.

Apparently I didn't give him the material he was looking for. But I'm thankful for the opportunity, Lord, to be reminded of who You are and how You dwell within each and every one of us. May I have eyes to see?
