So... Jane and I are trying to decide where to go for our 25th wedding anniversary next May. I am terrible at stuff like this, and we are both kinda stumped. At first we talked about one of those "all-inclusive" vacations, but they are all out of the country. We don't have passports, and, you know, they're out.of.the.country. A cruise has come up, but I'm claustrophobic and leery of seasickness (I'm just a whiner, aren't I?). Thought about a resort near Epcott Center in Florida; or Las Vegas. But... I dunno.
Does anyone have any ideas for a place to go for a week, that wouldn't require a car, and where you don't have to do anything but you could if you wanted to? Any input would be more than welcome. And you don't have to be a "usual" commenter to comment. Help!!!
UPDATE: We ended up going to the Dreams Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. We had a travel agent book it through Apple Vacations - which I am glad we did since we had never been out of the country before (we did need to get passports). Apple was very helpful in getting us from the airport and in telling us things to do and things to avoid. You can read a bit about our vacation HERE. It was by far the nicest place we have been, and the best vacation we have ever had.

How outdoorsy are you? How 'bout a dude ranch in Colorado? Ride horses, fly fish, go white water rafting, etc., etc., surrounded by the beautiful mountains. I had a friend that's taken his family twice now and they love it. It's a bit too expensive for my brood (five of us total), but for two people it could be pretty reasonable (and May is still "out of season" for most places, so could run a bit cheaper).
It wouldn't be a "pampered" resort type of thing, but could be something memorable and fun, if being in the mountains is at all your type of thing. And it's, you know, in.the.country. :-)
I'm really in the mood to go to Philidelphia, Jersey, Boston...East Coast basically. I know we're not going with you two but I always hear about how cool the East Coast is. Tons of culture..tons of cool things to see...and a lot of my friends went there after school and love it!
I think it would be affordable. There are enough touristy things that you could go on tours and what not but you could also just walk around and go to coffee shops...which i love.
good thing i made it to work...there's so much to do...???
I did some research, I really want to go now...

This makes no sense for an anniversary. It is out of the country, allows a limited number of visitors, requires a permit (probably 6 months in advance), does not allow women, and the main language is not English but I vote for this.

And don't worry about Jane. While your getting your life straightened out she can enjoy the beautiful beaches of the Aegean until you get back.
Hey Dan,
I put this question out there in January and here's a link to the post...there were quite a few ideas thrown around, so I thought I'd pass it along:

That being said, we're not going to any of them (although we did look into several). After EXTENSIVE RESEARCH, we settled on Hermitage Bay in Antigua, and yes, it will be the first time either one of us have needed a passport; for me, the first time out of the Country. (Here's a link to HB):

We wanted tropical, somewhat secluded, good food...and this place received GREAT reviews from Trip Advisor (you might want to google that site--it's FABULOUS because tourists are the ones posting reviews). There's nothing to do but lounge around the pool, water sports, there's golf and a spa...and individual cottages where you can...celebrate your anniversary ;).
I know you weren't thrilled about going out of the Country...me? I have to get on and off planes SIX dayem TIMES! For that, I've already gotten a special little prescription...we'll see if I "have" to use it :/.
Good luck...you're a fine man to be thinkin' about this so far in advance :). That should get you a few brownie points with your bride!
These are some really good suggestions (well, other than Tom's). Someone also mentioned the Grand Canyon. Thanks for thinking about it.
Perhaps I should further state... the activities I foresee are (1) eating a couple of meals a day, and (2) trying to find a lounge chair either on a beach or near a pool. I mean, if there was a Sandal's resort in the US - that would be perfect.
So keep those ideas coming!
Ooooooo, and if you want a GREAT SE venue...CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA!!! It's BEAUTIFUL that time of year, there wonderful history, sight-seeing, dining out, shopping--A MUST-SEE city if y'all have never been. It's about 40 minutes from Kiawah (which is a WONDERFUL destination, too...check out their resort facility, "The Sanctuary"...pricey, but beautiful); and you've probably read HOW MUCH I LOVE KIAWAH! There's a famous arts festival in May--Spoleto--and y'all could be entertained coming and going. Check it out...if you google any of that, you'll go into information overload...kind of like I've done here (sorry).
Robin & I must have commented at the same time. That's kinda the idea... but SIX plane changes?!? I dunno.
Thanks for the links, I'll check them later.
I think Dan's describing his 50th anniversary vacation by mistake. Dan, don't you want to sky-dive in the Cayman's, land on a yaght the size of the Carl Vinson and shoot skeet off the quarterdeck with impact-exploding C4 (in lieu of clay) pigeons that will light up the sky?! Also, EVERYONE'S NAKED!!!
Buuut, I also hear Decatur is nice. Can't beat the Back 40 Junction.
Dan...
I sure do hope sex is on the menu, too...
I'm just sayin'....
;)
(you're gonna ban me from commenting, aren't you???)
...then again, spelling that out could put your kids in therapy...S.O.R.R.Y. guys!! :D
Sex? Haven't you been listening, they've been MARRIED 25 years!
After that long, setting up her TV tray for her becomes the equivalent of sex.
oh wow. sorry i came here today...
Hey, hey, hey... this is supposed to be a family show here. I think my TV trays are nobody's business but mine.
Sorry kids, counselors are probably available near you both.
mr,
then they should be reeealll good at it by now....
Wow. You still tried to celebrate it out of town. The place is really beautiful. I haven't been there but I've heard many positive feedback on Punta Cana.
