Funeral picketers lose lawsuit
According to THIS ARTICLE the church that pickets military funerals and holds up signs like "God Hates Fags" has lost an 11-million dollar lawsuit. Not that I should be happy, but..... I am. I think these people are seriously misguided and an embarrassment to Christianity. I seriously doubt the lawsuit will stick, and I doubt that it will do anything but make them even more callous in their protesting, but.... I still hold out hope that God would get a hold of their hearts and open their eyes.

I'm not exactly sure what to make of this case. Dont' get me wrong, Fred Phelps is an evil idiot who sheds a very bad light on Christianity - especially the Baptists. Some kids I graduated did a documentary on this man. It's not finished yet but we got to watch a lot of the interviews pre-edited. There's something wrong with him.
But what does this say about freedom of speech?
I doubt this Snyder man did it for the money. I think it was about time someone took legal action against Phelps but I'm not sure it was constitutional. I guess the "intent to cause emotional distress" is a loop hole.
My arms are thrown in the air on this one. Although I firmly believe what this church is doing is wrong...did you know they were in Ft. Wayne picketing a musical at IPFW once?
I'm happy to say that if stopping this means a limitation (gasp) of our freedom to be a-holes, I will accept that specific limitation. It would be hard for any lawyer to spin this as precident toward anything that affects NORMAL people.
Good point about the free speech thing. I am not very knowledgeable about stuff like that. I think it's one thing to protest or say things against the government though, but it seems to be a bit 'cruel and unusual' to take this to such a personal level as a funeral. I dunno.
And.... yes, I did see them picketing in Fort Wayne (it was a few years ago, I believe). I've also seen them in Indy.
