Jane and I have decided to look into buying a nice digital camera for Christmas this year. She is pretty good with a camera, and enjoys taking pictures not only for us, but has done it for others a little bit too (weddings, and family pics, etc.). I currently have an el-cheapo digital, and Jane has a Canon Rebel 35mm that she really likes. But we probably need to get up to speed and get a better digital. Does anyone have any advice?
The digital Rebels look good, but it appears they don't have video capability - which isn't necessary, but it would be nice. She also has a nice zoom lens, so we would like one you can interchange lenses. I start to freak out when we get up into the $600-$700 range though. Is it worth it to pay that much? What are good brands? These are the type of questions I'm thinking.
I am printing off some comparisons from PC World and other places right now, but if you have any suggestions, I would certainly appreciate it.

Okay, Dan...you asked for it, you know you'll get it from me if I have an opinion....
I posed this question on my blog before our trip; here's the link to everything commentors had to say:
SLR Camera Questions?
Next, YES, IT'S WORTH IT! My husband balked at the price, too, but even he agrees there's a major difference. We got a Nikon D40, and this time of year there ARE deals to be made (maybe more so after Christmas). It's user friendly, but I've yet to begin tapping into all it can do. That being said, I TOOK OVER 600 PICTURES ON OUR TRIP and love every one of them!! I'm so thankful we bought it THE DAY BEFORE WE LEFT and only wish I knew all its capabilities.
I promise you'll have no regrets for getting what y'all WANT this time around; and you'll see the difference.
:) Let me know what you end up with :).

You can expect your Ritz registration information on Monday. Or come here this weekend and I'll give you a sneak preview. :)
Robin,
Thanks for the info. That Nikon is one I've looked at. Unfortunately your link was TO YOUR WHOLE BLOG though. I tried looking for the camera post, but had no luck. I'll try again later (unless you wanna update the link). :)
As always, thanks for sharin'.

Jane will love me...you're going to learn how to bake a smokin' buttermilk pie AND clean your shower!
(yep, I'm just trying to up your comment count on this post...:/)
:)
this is how women move in, they just keep leaving more and more things at your house until they live there.
Robin,
Ahhhh, yes, thank you. Although I thought we were to use bleach and peanut butter to clean the camera. =)
That was actually quite helpful. And, nothin' wrong with your *whole blog*... but trying to find something there is like looking for a needle in a haystack. You need a search feature. :)
Thanks again! I do appreciate it.
MR,
That sounds like experience speaking. :)
We recently bought a new camera and it was that Nikon D40 that kept calling to us, but we bought the Canon Powershot S3. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4756536
The Nikon is also only 6M. What I love about the Canon is you see the actual photo in the viewfinder (many cameras you don't) and the pictures have been fantastic.
My brother bought the Nikon and he loves it. I don't think you can go wrong with the Nikon. Get it before the vacation.
Brian,
Yeah.... I've been wondering about those powershots too. We've really liked our Canon 35mm. But another vote for the Nikon D40... Hmm.
Thanks for the info.
