Books of 2007

I finally finished Scot McKnight's book The Jesus Creed. It was odd finishing it up right before Christmas - as it ended with the resurrection. Really good book. I'm glad I went slow.

In fact, this year was a slow reading year for me all around. I only read eight books this year. I think it was fifteen last year. But they were all pretty good books, and a little more diverse than some years.

These are the books I read this year:

- Youthful Desires, Darrell Reimer (aka Whisky Prajer)

- You Don’t Need A Title To Be A Leader, Mark Sanborn

- They Like Jesus But Not The Church, Dan Kimball

- Pilgrim Heart, Darryl Tippens

- The Externally Focused Church, Rick Rusaw & Eric Swanson

- Discover Your Spiritual Gifts, C. Peter Wagner

- On Being A Servant of God, Warren W. Wiersbe

- The Jesus Creed, Scot McKnight

Up next will likely either be Brian McLaren's Everything Must Change, Rainer & Geiger's Simple Church, or Scott Morton's Down To Earth Discipling. Unless something else jumps out at me.

I'm a semi-regular blog lurker here, but don't usually post...Anyway, I've been encouraging a lot of people to read John Stott's new book "The Living Church: Convictions of a Lifelong Pastor." It's an excellent study of what Stott believes a Christian church should really be based on his 60 years in ministry. Great book from a wonderful pastor and scholar. If you get a chance, I highly recommend it.

Merry Christmas!!!

Jim,
Great to hear from you! Anyone who has preached in my church is certainly welcome to recommend a book. Sounds good. I will add that to my list of desirables.

Merry Christmas to you too! And try to keep those upstairs co-workers in line, will ya? :)

Simple Church was better than I thought it would be. It should be a smaller book though. Don't hesitate to skip chapters that only try to convince you of the concept of simple.

Brian,
Thanks for the tip. I'd actually started it before, and it appears i should have just skipped instead of stopping.

Good grief, I think it is time for a change in genre. If you aren't familiar with Wodehouse I would suggest "The Most of P.G. Wodehouse" or one of his other samplers. It will do your spirit good. Here is a sample:

"He realized too late that George was in public relations, and the brains of people in public relations are like the soup in poor restaurants: It's never a good idea to stir them up."

Tom,
Why would I read Wodehouse when I can just read your blog? :)

Because it would take you 1 minute and 23 seconds to read a year's worth of my posts.

Oh, and Wodehouse knows how to write.

I've read Mark Sanborn's book, You Don't Need a Title to be a Leader and it was great.
