Sex & masturbation

Greg Boyd has a couple of good posts up. One is "Why Sex Is A Big Deal," and the other "The Question of Masturbation." I admit that I have trouble tackling subjects like these in a small-church setting, so you should click the links and read what he has to say. Good stuff (unless you came here looking for porn).

Iiii think he should have stopped short of saying that casual sex brought down the wrath of muslim extremists. True though it may be, it's not even worth mentioning when it's a by-product of a culture that strives for the equal rights of women and all people. One could also argue that they're violent because they don't have a sexual outlet. In any case, they don't deserve the citation when they are very open about beating their wives and summarily executing women for socializing... not to mention the occassional "honor killing" of a daughter. There's no credibility there--he probably should have skipped that part, it brings down the whole article.

'course I didn't go to Yale or Princeton...

While I somewhat agree...reading the Qur'an recently has shed a lot of light on the issue of women in Islam. Based on the text (so far that I've read) there isn't much difference as to how they are portrayed in the Qur'an and the Bible, and sometimes the Bible looks harsh in comparison. Anyway, just a thought.

Having read other things from Greg, I don't think he is trying to excuse anyone. We have to remember that reality and perception are never the same thing. I think he's trying to point out that the *perception* these people have of Americans is that of an immoral society. They only see a controlled fraction of who we are - just like we only see a controlled fraction of who they are. And this is what they see and think of us (true or not - though it is perhaps truer than most of us would like to think). At least that's what I think. I didn't go to Yale or Harvard either.

Thanks for bringing us up to speed on the Qur'an, Isaac. I've not read any of it.

Yeah, I don't see him excusing it. It just seemed out of place in the article. I mean, how much do I care what my wife-beating neighbor thinks of me and how I live? He probably should have avoided the whole topic because it would be soooo easy for someone to read that as: "Maaan, those Muslims, they've got their women in line. Aren't we embarrassed?"
