10,000 runners... and 11 miles in the rain

This is an article about the Fort4Fitness race Jane and I are going to be running in 2 weeks: http://www.wane.com/dpp/news/local/fort-4-fitness-has-record-number-of-participants. Apparently there are supposed to be 10,000 runners. Jane is doing the 10k (6.2 miles), and I'm doing the half-marathon (13.1 miles). It says they're expecting 3,500 runners just for the half. I have never run with that many people and am not sure how that will go. I'm sure things will spread out over the course of the run, but even though the 10k and half don't start at the same time, we end up finishing together on the course, and many of us will finish at the same time. So that should be interesting. In any event, I am looking forward to it. I guess they have bands playing along the route, and different things set up. Plus the pre-race and post-race events. I think it will be fun. Hopefully I can make this an annual event. Though I don't know if I'll do the half every year. We'll see. I definitely need to move my training schedule back if I do. I started long runs much too early.

Anyway... this morning I did one of those long runs. I ran 11 miles in 1:35, averaging 8:38 miles, and burning 1238 calories. I then walked another mile for a cool-down. And I did cool down. And it rained almost the entire time. I waited around hoping that it would stop, because it was supposed to stop at 9 am. And it might have actually stopped shortly before I was done running, but at that point I wasn't really paying attention anymore. Not only did I get soaked, but it was a bit chilly, and not just a little windy, too. But I ran well. I hit 7 miles at exactly the 1-hour mark (7 mph), and did 10 miles in 1:26. I also found a bright green softball at Tillman park, so I picked it up and ran the rest of the way home with it (about 2 miles).

I was a little worried, because my legs have been really sore all week since Monday. Actually, my whole body has been sore. But after about the 3rd mile I started feeling better. It wasn't until about 4 1/2 miles that I finally started running 8-minute miles. I actually felt pretty good from then on. I've been icing since I got done - my knees and thighs.

I weighed 144.8 before running (and after eating eggbeaters and an english muffin). I was 141.6 after running.

I think it is going to be a fun event and although we won't be running the same race, I will be happy knowing that we are both running at the same time.
