Weekend in Cancun

Jane and I took a short vacation this past weekend. She had 5 days off in a row so at the last minute we booked a trip to Cancun, Mexico from Friday through Monday. It was pretty nice, even if it did rain every single day.

We have never done anything quite this radical this spontaneously. I think we just started talking about it Monday, and Tuesday we got online and had our flight and hotel booked through Apple Vacations (we used them for our Dominican Republic trip several years ago too). It was one of their 'last-minute specials.' We figured that depending on what type of job I get I may not have much vacation for awhile, so... what the heck. We just went for it.

We left out of Fort Wayne Friday at 6:25 am and flew through O'Hare. We arrived in Cancun at 11:30 am (CST). We got a ride from the airport to the resort from Apple and it took 40 minutes - which included dropping off one couple at another resort along the way.

Coming home we left the resort at 9:25 am to go to the Cancun airport. Our 3 1/2 hour flight was at 12:40 pm. We then had a long layover in Chicago - which was lengthened by plane problems. We finally left at 10:25 pm (CST) and arrived in Fort Wayne at 12:25 am (EST). We landed to snow and ice on our car.

We stayed at an all-inclusive, adults-only resort. There were three pools, six or so restaurants, and several bars. It also had a couple different beach areas. The sand on the beach and in the ocean was the softest and coolest we had ever experienced. It was a nice time, and the people at this resort were the friendliest we had ever encountered. I thought it was a really good time.

The people we rode with from the airport actually rode back to the airport with us Monday (Wayne and Leona from Boston). We hung around with them quite a bit, and exchanged email addresses. There was also Dan and Deanna from Canada, the Lithuanian, the couple from France (I never could understand his name, but hers was actually 'France'), a young couple from Antigua, Bob & Gail from Ohio, Dan and Lainey from Scranton, Pa., Lance and Lisa from Alabama, Paul and Vivian from the UK, another guy from England, the coach from New York, Rick and Jill from Nebraska, Bill and Kathy from Minnesota, and Gigi from S. Carolina. There were plenty of other people we chatted with and ran into from time to time. It was kind of like a little colony of people together. There were new people coming all the time, but it was funny how much everybody seemed to hang out together.

All in all it was a very nice trip with good plane rides to and from. It was especially nice having our first experience in first class coming back from Cancun. Those must have been the only seats available when we booked the flight. A very nice weekend.
