I had two interesting happenings involving 'talk' yesterday. They both caught my attention, perhaps because I'm not really all that big on talking (unless I've had a lot of caffeine, or alcohol, or you're my poor wife who catches me "in a mood").
First off, I read an article 'Why You Should Get Good at Small Talk.' I have never been a big fan of small talk. Usually I would rather just sit and think - especially if I don't know you; although, there are plenty of people I DO know that I have no desire to small-talk with. I suppose I find it useless and boring.
However, I have to admit, the article made a great deal of sense, and I think I need to start working on my small-talk skills.
The author claims small talk has three main benefits:
- It calms you
- It connects you
- It's how you learn to be brave
- Family
- Interests
- Recreation
- Entertainment

The other situation happened as Jane and I took in 'lunch on the square' yesterday. They have a bunch of food trucks, and businesses set up tables, there's live music and whatnot. As we were leaving, though, we noticed this lone guy sitting sort of out in the middle of an area. There was also an empty chair beside him, and a sign that said, "You talk & I listen." I was immediately intrigued. He wore a clerics collar and a serene smile, so I knew he must be some kind of minister.
I wanted to take a picture but it felt a little awkward, plus I was kind of rushed for time. However, lo and behold, a simple google search of "lunch on the plaza you talk and I listen guy" turned him up!
Apparently this is a ministry of Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne. I have no idea about the church, but from looking at their website, they have some pretty cool looking ministries.
I hope to return to a lunch on the square and have a chat with the man. Though I would kind of like to ask HIM questions! I think this is a wonderfully beautiful idea. We will see what happens.
