I finished reading Scott and Jenny Jurek's book 'North: Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail' yesterday. I loved it! I love books like this! I need to read more books like this! :)
This was a Christmas present to me from the son and his wife. She wrote inside the front cover, "Merry Christmas, you adventurer!" Reading this account of Scott Jurek's record-breaking attempt at the entire 2,189 miles of the Appalachian Trail actually was an adventure in and of itself (at least for me)! Each day I looked forward to finding out how his near-50-mile-a-day days were going over the course of 40-some days straight. It was quite fascinating, as well as just plain enjoyable.
And... I actually only dog-eared ONE page in the entire book. It was for this quote at the start of the "Mid-Atlantic" section:
"Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose." -Yoda, Star Wars
Anyway, I topped off this day I finished reading the book by rewatching 'The Barkley Marathons,' and then Karl Meltzer's 'Made To Be Broken' (a documentary on Karl's attempt at breaking the same AT record).
I don't know that I could ever be an ultra runner - I'm not sure my body is made for it - but I sure do find it interesting. Plus I like reading stories and watching movies about people who push themselves farther than many of us think we're capable of going.
So, now it's on to the next book. I hope it is as enjoyable as this one was.
