Where is the fringe?

I started reading Mark Scandrette's book 'Practicing The Way of Jesus: Life Together in the Kingdom of Love.' I got a free copy from my pastor because apparently he likes this book (instead of the ones I suggested).

I am not opposed to it, and remember reading about it - and his "experiments in faith practices" - in the blogging world when it came out back in 2010 or 2011. That seems like eons ago now, especially after getting through the first chapter.

Aside from the book in general for now, what really struck me right away was this question of: "Where are the ardent, faithful people right now? What are they doing? What is their practice for following Jesus?"

Beginning on p. 17 (kindle version), Scandrette says:
Twenty years ago, when I was in college, the most ardent Jesus seekers of my generation wanted to become pastors, teaching missionaries or evangelistic workers. While we asked how we could help people believe in Jesus and prepare to die, today's college students are more likely to ask, "How can I be like Jesus and change the world?" I regularly hear the young people I meet or work with express their passion for God more holistically: (working with AIDS orphans, living in intentional communities, fighting human trafficking, etc., etc.).

The boundaries for our understanding of what it means to seek the kingdom of God "on earth as it is in heaven" are radically and necessarily expanding...

Later (p. 22) he lays out how since Christianity was legalized under Constantine, prophetic groups have formed to continue to present The Way as a compelling alternative to "the empire." As he says,

"When Christianity becomes the civic or folk religion of society, fringe movements inevitably arise to call people toward more authentic and embodied discipleship to Jesus..."

I believe what we've seen in politics lately is a huge indication of this, and what I want to know is... where are these fringe movements now??????

Seriously, this is the most jacked I've been about a question in a long time. I honestly do not know where the outliers are... where the ardent followers are... how our young people are making sense of their faith... ... ..

---

So, I write this not so much as a question (although, by all means, if someone has an answer, feel free to enlighten me), but I'm really writing it out more as a prayer to God. I do not know, and I want to know. I want to hope and believe that there still are people out there who care and who are moving and growing in their faith and belief and practice as followers of Jesus. I simply do not know where they are or how they are doing it. That both saddens as well as frightens me (on a personal level). Maybe because it raises an even bigger question of: and why aren't I there/aware?

Well, that's all I've got for now. A question. Does anyone know? Does anyone else wonder? I do not know...
