Last week I completed the American Red Cross course 'CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers with AEO and First Aid' as well as Bloodborne Pathogens Training. It is good for 2 years.
I have to have it for my job. Previously I was certified through the American Heart Association. Apparently the Y switched to the Red Cross. I will say, while it was similar, this was more time-consuming and I probably learned more. As I looked back at the first certification it only took me 3 hours and it was all classroom. For the Red Cross training, it is like 3 hours of online followed by 5 hours of classroom (though it only took 3 1/2 because there were only 4 of us in my class). Plus I don't recall the tests being so difficult before.
I had to take 3 tests: 2 CPR/AED/First Aid/BBP (1 on line and 1 in-person), and one on administering oxygen (in person). I flunked the first test (68%) and realized I needed to take this a little more seriously. Fortunately we had 2 chances to pass before being locked out for 24 hours. I got a 96 or 98 the second time.
I have to admit, I didn't have a very good attitude about this when I started. My previous certification had lapsed, and instead of someone just telling me so, my boss's boss sent me this ignorant long email bitching me out for it. Honestly, I had no idea it was up to me to keep track of this stuff. Heck, I didn't know when I took it last or how long it lasted. All I needed was a simple reminder. I didn't need to be disrespected for not doing my dumb-ass low-paying worthless job without the proper certification! Whatever... I figured I would at least get re-certified on the company dime, then I can use the experience to look for another job (although we all know I probably won't).
Anyway, I did feel like this was worthwhile training. I don't know that I could actually help someone in a time of need, but I am more likely to know what to do now than I was before.

Romans 14:7-8
"For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord."
