Good questions

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone who's trying to work through a decision, and you just can't think of the right words to say? Maybe it's a good friend, a child, sibling, co-worker, or really anyone, and you want to help so bad.

I may or may not have linked to this article from Gwen Moran before: "The Best Mentors Ask These 8 Questions." Sure, it's for mentors/coaches, but I find these can be useful by us regular folk trying to figure out life too. Maybe even if the conversation is solely in your own head!

The article is short and to the point, so I will just share the 8 questions and encourage you to read the whole thing for better understanding.

  1. What does success look like to you?
  2. What is the outcome you want?
  3. What do you want to be different in three to five years?
  4. What are the obstacles you're facing?
  5. What can you control?
  6. What are the options you've come up with?
  7. Tell me more.
  8. What are you reading?

This brings back fond memories of the years I studied and dabbled in leadership coaching. I liked doing it, and sometimes didn't even suck. It requires a mental outlook I can't seem to muster anymore, but I can still draw on things like this for everyday life.

I will say, the one phrase from above I used to have trouble with was "tell me more." When someone says this to me it becomes obvious what they're doing (and I don't much care for it). So it needs to be used sparingly, and in just the right way (imho). Otherwise, I like the rest!

One other question that's always stuck with me is: What's something no one ever asks you about, but you wish they would? Well... I'm waiting!!! ;)

I definitely agree with the "tell me more" statement. I would wonder what book someone had just read when they used that. I'm trying to think of a question I wish someone would ask me but right now...I got nothin'. :)
