"For 50 million years our biggest problems were too few calories, too little information. For about 50 years our biggest problem has been too many calories, too much information. We have to adjust, and I believe we will really fast. I also believe it will be wicked ugly while we're adjusting."
-- Penn Jillette, magician, actor, musician, inventor, television presenter, and author
I've had the above quote sitting in an unpublished draft for about a year. It seemed like things were pretty wicked ugly then. Do you think they are better or worse now? Sometimes I feel like there is no hope.
I just finished watching Trevor Noah's clip talking about Joe Rogan's response to artists pulling their content from Spotify. I'm not overly familiar with Trevor or Joe, but I'm a big fan of Neil Young, so about all I knew was that Neil told Spotify to stop playing his music if they were going to continue to allow Joe to spread lies about covid vaccines and whatnot. I also saw a lot of people throwing shade at Neil because he's just an old man and they thought it was silly. Well, apparently Joe responded, and admitted that he was maybe wrong. I didn't see Joe's response (I don't really watch any of these shows/podcasts), but I watched Trevor's because a friend suggested it. It seemed fairly reasonable. Like, you know, maybe it's possible people can respond to criticism after all. Who knows.
Anyway, I don't know. I was a little wicked ugly myself this morning when I got to work and the cleaning person had failed to show up AGAIN. But... I eventually adjusted.
Maybe none of this means anything. Or... maybe not. It helped get me through today. So far.
