Giving the finger to learning new ways

I've written before about the trouble I'm having with my left middle finger. It hurts. Not always. Mostly when I use my left hand, but sometimes it just hurts. For many people this would be no big deal, but I do many things with my left hand. I write and eat left handed - but I throw a ball and do more physical things with my right hand (Yes, I'm mixed up). And I also use my left hand to make notes and chords on a guitar neck. So... it's more than a little inconvenient.

It occurred to me this morning that my situation with my finger is similar to what happens when one gives their life to God: you begin to learn to do things in a different way. With my finger... I have had to adjust how I do some things. I can't lift a mug or carry my cereal bowl the same. When I drive and pick up items, I am now more aware that I need to use my right hand. And there are some things I simply cannot, or should not, do anymore. I hope playing the guitar is not one of these things (I'd rather not think about it).

Isn't that what happens when we begin a new life in the way of Christ though? We 'learn to do things differently.' It's not that we stop watching TV or using the internet or going to movies. But we may feel compelled to view "different" things than we used to. We will still talk, but maybe talk about different things. Even our thinking might be altered. We will be more "aware" of certain things. And... yes, there will be some things we will want to stop doing altogether.

But the good news is... the more we practice these new ways, the more natural they will become. From time to time we may still have the urge to resort back to using the left hand. But we will now be aware that the right hand works just fine, and it is in our best interest to use it instead.

Anyway, just a thought. Not deep theology or anything. I really hope I can still play guitar though.
