I've decided to go ahead and preach about The Davinci Code this Sunday (I'm hoping to see the movie beforehand). I wasn't going to address it at all (mostly because I haven't read the book), but I didn't want to start something else right now. I'm going to be gone next Sunday, and the Sunday after that I'm planning a graduation sermon based on Guy Kawasoki's blog post entitled "The Art of Sucking Down" (as opposed to being a suck-up). So, I thought this Sunday I would address how we can RESPOND to the Davinci Code.
My points are (presently) going to be: Don't Freak Out; Don't Get Sucked In; and Don't Forget The Good News. The overall point being... sometimes Christians tend to get so freaked out over stuff like this, and we get sucked into arguments and whatnot, and it's often our reaction that causes people to miss the Good News of Jesus. So... there you go.
BTW... I think I just saw a glimmer of sunshine. I'm feeling a little better today too.
peace.

Here's an analogy I used Sunday: I was pulling out of our parking lot last week at church. You have to back out into the street. I looked both ways and thought it was clear, but when I got backed up, I was halfway on the road and halfway off. When I looked in the rearview mirror, a big white pickup truck was bearing down on me. I knew I had made a mistake and I wanted to correct it. So right or wrong (I was trying to make a quick decision), I tried to pull onto the road and get out of his way as quick as possible. This did not suit the truck. He held his current speed and course and would have rammed me had I not pulled back to the side of the road.
I was really mad. I knew I had made a mistake and I was trying to correct it, but the truck refused to show any generosity. He even pulled to the side not far down the road. I'm not sure if was inviting me to a fight or not. I just drove on.
My point is that too often the church is the big white truck, refusing to be gracious to people who have made mistakes. And by the time they do pull off, the unchurched, who knows they've made mistakes, isn't about to stop and if they do, they are going to fight.
Great analogy, Brian. Just what I was looking for. Thanks! Thanks for the other comment too; and the interaction on the cggc blog.
Hope you're well.
Hey Dan,
Good three points to look at the topic. the congregation at Grange is older and they just don't "care" about the DaVinci Code. ...or I might steal your idea. :-)
BOB BARATTA... wow, long time! Great to hear from you. I hope Lance remembered to tell you 'hi' from me. :) I didn't know you were involved in the WTS/College First thing. That is awesome. And, I agree with Adams about polemic discussions.
Later...
Frank,
I forgot to tell you... I met a lady from Punxsutawney when we were registering Isaac at Anderson University. She was registering her daughter. I can't remember her name, but she said she knew right where your church was. I was checking up on you, just to make sure it really exists. :)
Later pal.
I'm impressed with your site, very nice graphics!
