I believe many people feel Dr. King was all about race, and while he was to a large extent... it goes much further than that. He was, and this holiday is, more about JUSTICE than anything else (imho). And justice is not about 'getting even' or 'paying someone back.' It's about MAKING THINGS RIGHT. Here is a link to the text of his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.
I did not know that it was Ronald Reagan who signed the bill making this a federal holiday... and that it was signed on my birthday in 1983! There is an informative article on MLK Day at Wikipedia.
Amos 5:21-24 (The Message):
"I can't stand your religious meetings.
I'm fed up with your conferences and conventions.
I want nothing to do with your religion projects,
your pretentious slogans and goals.
I'm sick of your fund-raising schemes,
your public relations and image making.
I've had all I can take of your noisy ego-music.
When was the last time you sang to me?
Do you know what I want?
I want justice--oceans of it.
I want fairness--rivers of it.
That's what I want. That's all I want."

Have you read his letter from Birmingham jail? It's long...but BEAUTIFUL. Hit my site if you haven't seen it before or if it's been a while...
Yeah, I think a lot of us are prefer seeing him as one-dimensional when he was ANYTHING but!
Thanks for the link (though it took a while to actually get there) to Dr. King's "Letter From Birmingham Jail". It is good.
btw... I like the look of your new blog (even if you are a blogger traitor). :)
I HATE TYPOS IN COMMENTS, but only when I make them...I'm much more forgiving of everyone else. Grrrr! :(
Did I hear sarcasm in your comment back to me? Cause I think I hear sarcasm. Which, as you might suspect, is a compliment to me;).
When I read that last year, I was blown away...I thought, "How come I never had to read THIS in school?". It's worth whatever it takes to find it on my blog(s) and then READ it from start to finish, eh?
Thanks on my new blog "look" although it's a TypePad standard template. I MISS Blogger 'cause I can't just navigate my way around TP. PLUS, and you might guess this, too, I MISS THE PROFILE PICS/AVATARS/THINGIES by our comments. I feel naked without my foot pic, ya know? That's why I still sign in on Blogger blogs w/my Blogger info...if people wanna find where I'm posting now, they'll find me...if they wanna...
Sarcasm? From me? Surely you jest. :)
And,yeah, you wouldn't be the same without your feet (you'd be shorter).
