Church watchdogs

I am always amazed at some people's ability to so completely miss the point and talk in circles. But then, I forget that a watchdog's sole purpose is to keep people FROM something. To distract, to scare, to manipulate.... Perhaps they have the best of intentions thinking they are protecting something valuable, but it's possible they're just keeping people from what they really need.

hmm...and this is in response to???

:)

I consider myself fortunate to be surrounded by the minds of the people i am surrounded by (if that makes sense?).

i think things are getting a bit out of hand in regards to certain conversations. the point is totally being missed. i find it interesting the one person sees no fault in their mindset when so many intelligent and educated people so clearly disagree. i would emphacize the "if i get called a donkey" analogy but i'm not getting involved.

thanks for being you and i can't say enough how thankfully i am that you and mom raised me and isaac to think critically.

What amazes me the most is that they are often willing to die for something that they apparently don't believe in enough to actually live by. It is as if they think that they are granted special immunity from prosecution simply because they defended it. It reminds me of something Campolo said about judgment day. He said he wished it was a theological exam because that would be easy. But he points out that Jesus himself tells us what the judgment day exam is going to be in Matthew 25. That's an exam a lot will fail because they don't see that if one truly "believes in his heart" they will do those things. They think that "profess with your mouth" is all there is too it.

I have no idea what you two are talking about. ;)

But just to throw something random out there... I believe there is a huge difference between a restorationist and a watchdog. I am all for someone fighting for something (even if it's to go back to something). Fighting to keep people from doing anything is what troubles me.

I agree with you there. I just wish there were more fighters and less resisters.

I feel bad for the person who spent a lot of time thinking about an issue and asking if anyone else felt the same. To feel passionately about something and be so bluntly shot down by someone who refuses to stop and think about it is a terribly discouraging feeling. If we can't build one another up and encourage each other as brothers and sisters in Christ, maybe we should all just go home.

of course, there are times when the fighter is in the wrong as well. i don't feel like this is the case but in such situations there is definately a right way and a wrong way to direct that person back to the truth.

Well, at the risk of offending people, I'll say I don't even mind watchdogs per se. I just don't like it when the watchdog is paranoid, arrogant, or hypocritical, or any combination thereof, which is all too common.

I also think the idea of "world views" gets tossed around all too casually without a real understanding of how different Greek and Hebrew world views really are and the impact it has on our understanding. You've probably already seen this but I think it really helps.

Okay, Carrie, this is weird. Two days in a row I post only to see you posted while I was writing. I feel like I'm in the twi-light zone.
