Evaluating my performance evaluation


I had my performance evaluation at work yesterday. Ugh. That's probably the best way to summarize the entire process.

I am not opposed to performance evaluations - I certainly understand their purpose and function - but that doesn't mean I am a fan of them either.

Apparently the company I work for uses the same form for everyone. It is broken down into the following categories:

CORE FUNCTIONS:
Servant Leadership - Routinely puts the needs of others first; provides excellent customer service at all times.
Dependability - Shows up and ready to work; rarely misses scheduled shifts; attends meetings.
Certifications & Trainings - All required certifications are kept current and up to date; all required trainings are completed.
Functional Expertise & Quality Results - Has the functional and technical skills to perform at a high level; achieves goals and expectations.

LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES: 
Values - Demonstrates in words and actions the Y's core values and mission.
Inclusion & Relationships -Values all people and builds authentic relationships with others.
Decision Making -Integrates logic and intuition in order to make sound judgments; solves problems.
Communication -Listens and expresses self effectively while understanding the needs of others.
Change Capacity - Leads self and others by adapting to new situations.
Emotional Maturity - Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills; refrains from gossip; able to respond to difficult situations in a positive manner.

How it works with my boss is... we go category by category, and first I tell him whether I think I "Need Improvement," "Meet Expectations," or Exceed Expectations." Then he tells me where he rated me in each category. This is probably what I hate the most, because I'm generally not going to say I 'exceed expectations' in anything. Although I did rate myself higher than he did in "Certifications & Trainings" due to how much I read and the outside classes and seminars I take. But even if I'd told him about it I doubt he would have remembered.

Anyway, the boss rated me as 'exceeding expectations' in the following: Servant Leadership, Dependability, and Communication.

At the end are some more general categories with space for greater clarification. I am including the comments from my boss on the first one, but I did not realize until just now that what he wrote in the last two are NOT AT ALL EVEN REMOTELY WHAT I SAID. I have no idea where he came up with the answers to them. Anyway, here are the last four categories:

1. Supervisor's general comments on employee's overall performance during the evaluation period: Dan continues to do a great job in his role at _______. He relates well to our members. He continues to take initiative when it comes to improving processes and communication among staff per earlier comments. His contribution to the organization of our indoor 5k proved to be a success.

4. Employee goals for the next evaluation period:

It's interesting because what I wanted him to hear from me was that I want to feel like I'm a part of the team (part of the Y as well as part of our branch team). Therefore I would appreciate more information, communication, and training so I can know what's going on (he tends to control the information flow to staff so we only know what he wants us to know, and I honestly think there's a lot he doesn't know we need to know).

As for my goals for the next evaluation period, I flat out said: "To find a job (hopefully this one) where my talents and skills can be utilized and I can serve as a contributing member of a team of people wanting to do good in the world" (I had this written down and read it word for word). You want to know what he wrote that I said? "Get more involved with social media aspects within the Y." I am dumbfounded as to where he even came up with that as an answer! I am literally sitting here shaking my head as I type this... Holy Cow!!!

So... I guess I'm glad the evaluation is over. Overall it was a positive process and took maybe 30-40 minutes. I spent quite awhile preparing for it because, honestly, there was a lot I wanted to say. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out a way to say most of it in a helpful way. Plus, about a quarter way into the evaluation I realized it wouldn't have mattered. My boss is a super nice guy, but I think he must get nervous easily, and therefore doesn't listen well and talks too much. So my evaluation of the evaluation is that I am perhaps even more disappointed and discouraged than I was before the evaluation. But... it's over and now I need to just show up and do my job each day...
