The heat is on
I learned something new by finally turning our heat on yesterday...
For some reason I always thought Glenn Frey recorded the song, "The Heat Is On" for the TV series 'Miami Vice.' It turns out Frey actually recorded it for the film 'Beverly Hills Cop.' I guess they were both mid-1980's hits, so this must be the reason for my confusion.
At any rate, that's not at all what this post is about. It is literally about the fact that... we turned our heat on. As in, the furnace.
I don't know why I/we always have this thing about seeing how long we can go before turning on the heat every fall. And it actually hadn't gotten all that cold inside the house. It must be well-insulated. The coldest it's been so far was the 62 degrees fahrenheit it was yesterday afternoon. That's not bad considering it's been down in the 30's a few times.
We didn't actually need to turn it on yesterday, but it's supposed to get down to a low of 26 tonight, and I think the grandkids may be coming over for awhile, so I thought I better make sure it works before we NEED to have heat. That happened last year. When it came time to fire it up, it wouldn't fire right away. I believe it was actually on this same date last year!
So, I set the temp for 66 in the mornings and evenings, and 63 during the night and while we're away during the day. I suppose I chose 66 because a lady I talked to yesterday said that's what she had hers at.
I do have to admit it was much more comfortable last night and this morning. Although I'm still not ready for cold, cold weather. They say there's actually a chance for snow tonight!
By the way, while that does look just like our thermostat, that is not my finger in the above pic. Just in case you wondered...

We have a goal of not turning on the heat until November 1 every year. The only year we didn't make it is when Evie was having radiation treatments. We do have a fire place, though. It doesn't create much heat, but it makes a perty fire. We cheated with it a few times. Still haven't started it yet this year. We move November 5.
