I have never liked getting my hair cut. I used to wear it long, and probably still would if I could. I've been buzz-cutting it myself for the last 7 years or so because... in case you haven't noticed, I have a big bald spot in the back and mostly on top.
I remember in my younger days, when I would dread getting my hair cut, people would say something like, "Oh, don't worry. It will grow back!" You know what? It doesn't always happen.
I have thought about this when I hear people saying things like, "When this virus thing is over..." Or, "When things get back to normal..."
You know what? We may not get back to "normal."
Oh, sure, it very well could happen. Our meager retirement investments may bounce back, the job may return to the way it was, summer may come and we will have forgotten all about this stay-at-home-pandemic thing. There's a big part of me that hopes this is the case.
There's also a part of me that hopes... you know... maybe things will change. For the better. Bald just might be beautiful, ya know!
A couple weeks ago I wrote a Facebook post something like,
"I would guess almost every business owner, CEO, or boss has at some point wished they could start over and do things different with their company. Well, your table is ready. The same is true for every worker too!"I think a few people thought it was a slam of some kind, but it wasn't. It was intended as a positive outlook on the situation at hand. I mean, really, places that have had to shut down or retool, this is a great opportunity to make changes. The same goes for employees who have hated their job and were just waiting for a reason to quit or find something else.
Granted, the job market is a tad volatile right now. There may be some big changes made in what kinds of jobs are available, how they are done, and who does them. This will be different, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be worse!
As Josh Spector stated (For The Interested)...
"The unknown is scary, but it's not new. You've never actually known what was going to happen next - you just convinced yourself you did."
We are going to deal with this, people. One way or another (and we may even deal with it poorly, as it seems the USA is). I guess the big question is: Are we going to take advantage of the opportunities before us now, or will we stick our heels in and resist? I could probably insert the story of the Israelites in the desert trying to convince Moses that they were better off the old way - in slavery.
In a way it's a little like grief. They say you can't process grief by staying in denial, or anger, or... whatever. Eventually you have to face the source of your grief... and move on.
So, I am trying to stay hopeful here. I was not all that happy in my job a month ago. I now have a chance to do things different. While it might be a bit scary, it could also be a really GOOD thing!
By the way, that's not actually my head pictured above. I don't even have that much hair. But it is what it is. Let's do this!
