This is the end

So it's the last day of 2014. Hmmm..... I'm not feeling very reflective at the moment, but I'm sure it's been an eventful year. Let's look back through the archives...

I got a new job this year. I started working at FWS on January 2nd. I remember there was quite a bit of snow. My first day there I got stuck in the drive right in front of the office. It was also Anna's 3rd birthday on the 23rd (the party).

Lady Jane turned 50 in February.

I got a new pair of eyeglasses in March (black frames).

We bought the 2011 Ford Escape in April, and also welcomed our 3rd grandchild into the world on 4/29, Caleb Daniel!

We bought a new oven/stove in May.

June brought Carrie's 29th birthday and Isaac's 26th. Jane and I also took a short trip to Folly Beach, SC. We stayed right on the beach, and also went to nephew Eric's wedding.

We helped son Isaac, and Ricci, move to Atlanta, GA in July. After 4 years of helping run The Exodus House in Anderson, IN he decided to go back to school and get his MDiv from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Ricci teaches at Hess Academy.

August was filled with several outdoor concerts and whatnot. It also marked the 1-year anniversary of being let go as a pastor. In addition, we tried out a couple of different churches.

September was filled with activity. Anna had her first day of preschool, I bought a motorcycle, Isaac & Ricci celebrated their first wedding anniversary, and I quit smoking cigarettes (again). I then ran my only 10k of the summer - with Jane and Carrie.

In October I started my Mentor Coaching class, grandson Bennett turned two, Jane and I took a weekend trip to Atlanta, and I ran in the River City Rat race 5k with Jane and Carrie.

In November I turned 52, we went and saw Jerry Seinfeld at the Embassy, Jane painted my bathroom, and we received the first snow of the year (just a couple of inches).

In December I became a certified 'Coach,' we hooked up the gas stove in the basement, Jane, Carrie and Anna took a weekend trip to Chicago, I bought a ukulele, Anna had her first ever pre-school Christmas program, and we celebrated Christmas at our house, and also at my parents in Illinois.

So... there ya go.

In my particular case, it was mostly about stress. I would look back to the house where I grew up and think about buying it back. But, it wasn't really my location I wanted to rewind, it was time. I came to realize that growing up in that house was a TIME and a place, and really didn't exist any more, even though the house still stands. The more stressed I got, the more I wanted to go back to a simpler time. Of course, owning that house wouldn't make me a dumb teenager again, and everyone wouldn't be young and living all together again, and it wouldn't bring my parents back--just a nice house in the woods. Although, still a good place to be if you don't want to be bothered by people.

I mention it because you said you were more comfortable in Ft. Wayne and Jane less. She has a much more challenging job than making pizzas now and after a long process you seem to have snatched peace from the jaws of discouragement.

So, you know that saying, "Home is where you hang your hat"? Funny, but I always thought of it as "anywhere will do". But now I think of it as: you hang your hat on your head, and the feeling of "home" is all in your head. Not that I was really mulling it over, it just came to me while I was typing this.

Also: I'm bribing Carrie with a lot of money to dig in her heels. You have to imagine me chewing on a cigar: "here you go, toots, you overpaid your Indiana state taxes by a bundle!"

It's been a process and a journey. You may very well look back on 2014 as a significant transition year. Here's to 2015. May the Lord order your days and direct your path. Godspeed and God bless!
