Our ten-year-old grand-daughter entered a poetry contest this past summer at the public library (at age 9)... and she won!!! It was for anyone in k-12th grades. I'm not sure how many winners there were, but they will all be published in a book of poetry. How cool is that!?!
Apparently they kind of forgot about the entry until the last minute and her mother just picked a random poem that was available and sent it in. So it wasn't like she created one special. I hear she is quite the writer - even for such a young age.
Ironically, our son is working on his PhD and hopes to be a writer, but his little niece has beat him to being published! :) Of course I have always dreamed of being a writer too, and she's beat me by a mile. And I'm glad!
Here is the poem:
Fall
I love Fall
I love all the crazy colors
and naked trees
and all the falling leaves
and all the raked leaves
and you jump into the piles
and then you get all filthy.
and you pick your favorite pumpkin
then carve it and roast the seeds
the chilly breeze surrounds you.
